Who We Are
We are a mixed-voice choir of around 30 souls who enjoy singing and performing under our Musical Director John Green. We give two concerts each year as well as a carol concert in a local church. The summer concert often involves soloists and orchestra.
We work together during the Autumn and Spring on music for our Christmas and Summer concerts. Our summer concert in 2007 included Dvorak's Te Deum, the Liebeslieder waltzes by Brahms, and part songs by Holst. In summer 2005 we gave a complete performance with orchestra and soloists of Haydn's Creation. Our programme for the 2007 Christmas concert was Rutter's Gloria and Te Deum and Carols for Choir, accompanied by Brass and Organ.
When and Where We Meet
We meet each Monday from 7.30 to 9.30 p.m. in the Kelsick Centre on St. Mary's Lane in Ambleside.
Our Conductor
We are incredibly lucky to have just acquired John Cooper Green as our musical director. John was born in Keswick, and after studying with Andrew Seivewright at Carlisle Cathedral he went to the Royal College of Music where amongst his teachers were Herbert Howells, Herbert Sumsion, Nicholas Kynaston and Ralph Downes. His first appointment was as Assistant Organist at Chester Cathedral, Director of Music at the Cathedral Choir School. Later posts included Assistant Director of Music at Rossall School, and Director of Music at Framlingham College in Suffolk. Whilst there he was appointed the first conductor of the Aldeburgh Chamber Choir by Sir Peter Pears. This involved responsibility for many concerts at The Maltings in Snape with the Britten/Pears Orchestra and working with such eminent conductors as Rostropovitch, Philip Ledger, George Malcolm and Stuart Bedford. After ten years at Framlingham he moved in 1990 to Stowe School as Director of Music and conductor of the Buckingham Choral Society. The school has a national reputation for excellence in music, with a music department of six full time members and over twenty visiting teachers. John has recently retired and returned to live near Keswick.
